FME Desktop 2008 - removing the barriers to spatial data conversion

FME Desktop 2007 offered users what had long been lacking in the geospatial industry – a versatile tool that provides spatial ETL capability for both vector and raster data. FME Desktop 2008 however has yet again raised the bar. Now geospatial professionals have a complete spatial ETL toolset to offer support for true 3D geometries and Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. This now increases interoperability across more applications and platforms than ever before. FME can now integrate true 3D data with other systems such as raster, CAD, and GIS, opening new opportunities for how spatial data can be used.

Format support

FME Desktop 2008 also broadens overall integration opportunities with support for over 220 formats. Some highlights include:

  • Popular formats such as AutoCAD Map 3D Object Data, GeoConcept Map, Adobe PDF, Industry Foundation Class STEP Files (IFC) and LandXML;

  • Database formats such as Oracle 11g and Microsoft SQL Server Spatial 2008;

  • Web formats such as KML 2.2 and GeoJSON.

New web format support enables users to take advantage of the rapidly growing number of web services, providing even more flexibility for data conversion.

FME Desktop 2008 is a testament to Safe Software’s ongoing dedication to advancement and innovation. Its unmatched format support, web based data access and scalable transformation capabilities make spatial data more accessible than ever before!

FME does raster - the movie!

FME Raster Clipper movie

How often has your area of interest (Building site, Site of Special Scientific Interest, Transport Interchange etc), fallen across the edge of one or more raster tiles? No doubt many times...Frustrating, isn't it? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to quickly clip out just the area you're interested in from those multiple tiles and glue them together to make one custom sized image? An image fit for purpose...

Well now you can! See how by viewing a simple example of how FME Desktop lends itself to raster processing.

What’s new in FME Desktop 2008?

Read and write data in over 220 formats with a single toolset. FME Desktop format support is unrivalled in the industry and supports CAD, GIS, raster, database, 3D and BIM formats; for example, AutoCAD DWF/DWG, Bentley Microstation Design file, ESRI Shape, GeoTIFF, Industry Foundation Class STEP Files (IFC) and Oracle Spatial. You can also Execute SQL queries against your spatial database, including ESRI ArcSDE, MySQL, PostGIS and SQL Server Spatial 2008.

Dealing with data formats is just the start though, as a user you may only be interested in a handful of data formats, it’s in data ‘transformation’ that things start to get really exciting!

Customer Quotations

From FME training course delegates:

I have been busy with FME since returning from the training. I love it!

Anthony Tuffour (GIS Development Officer), London Borough of Hackney.

This FME course has been a very useful learning experience and I feel that I will be able to take a lot away from it to put into practice.

Rosalind Whitham (Assistant Analyst), JBA Consulting.
