Mobile GIS: data collection simplified

Desktop GIS solutions are incredibly powerful but their very sophistication can be a hindrance in the field where staff need simplicity and speed. Mobile GIS can completely revolutionise the way field users view and collect data. It also simplifies importing the data back to the main GIS, making data updates easy.

We'll help you achieve:

  • A paperless, efficient data collection process
  • More control over the information workers gather
  • Access for the fieldworkers to the data they need, in the format they need it in
  • Easy synchronisation and uploading of new data to the network
  • Zero risk of transcription errors

We offer GBM Mobile which allows data collection on PDA devices and GBM Portable for Tablet OCs. They both integrate with MapInfo Professional so regular map users will find the interfaces intuitive to use. Each solution consists of three applications as outlined below.

Sample uses

- Housing associations assessing the state of repair of stock
- Woodland managers monitoring tree decay
- Fire authority inspectors assessing the status of fire hydrants
- Local authority officers assessing the condition of street furniture
- Charities assessing cycle routes
- Transportation units auditing the physical conditions of footpaths

Component 1: GBM Mobile or GBM Portable

These are the applications which run either on a PDA (GBM Mobile) or tablet PC (GBM Portable).

A full suite of navigation and data editing tools are available, allowing users to load data workspaces much as in MapInfo Professional.

Users can select and edit features, capture a new layer of information and view or edit attribute information.

Component 2: GBM Mobile Manager

This manages all user set up and administration tasks for both GBM Mobile and Portable.

A simple user interface, including customisable templates, make it easy for users to design data capture forms. No programming skills are required.

GPS support centres the map on the current location, or creates a trail of waypoints.

Layers of map data and templates are automatically copied over to the device.

Component 3: GBM Mobile Merge

This enables users to upload amended data back to the data store by email or when they are back in the office.

Any conflicts within the data, e.g. from multiple field workers, are highlighted so they are easy to resolve.
